Duties

The Associate Chief Nurse (ACN) is responsible for administrative functions of thier assigned nursing units/programs. The ACN provides
leadership and coordination of nursing practice standards and ensure nursing care is provided according to quality, licensing, and accreditation
standards. Develops strategic plans for medicine and surgical nursing, including mechanisms to ensure uniform quality and adherence to
standards. Creates a continuous improvement environment that promotes creativity and innovation in the medicine and surgical nursing areas,
sharing information across the enterprise to ensure best practice implementation and directly improve patient care delivery and outcomes;
nurse efficiency, effectiveness, and costs of care. The ACN ensures that medicine and surgical nursing areas function within budget and
continually examine practice to ensure cost effectiveness, efficient use human and supply resources and achievement of metrics as appropriate
to surgery (e.g. case volume, FTE allocation, supply cost targets, on-time case starts and reduction in turnover time, etc). Plans, organizes, leads
and evaluates assigned patient care services. Functions as an administrator, educator, and consultant utilizing management theory in
collaboration with patient care service and other services. Must establish and maintain effective relationships with all levels of medical center
personnel and relate effectively with customers, families, and the community as well as program and service leaders at the local and network
levels.

Work Schedule: Full time, Monday-Friday; Day Shift

    • Basic Requirements:
      United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA
      Policy.
      Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the
      following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in
      Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional
      nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved
      school of professional nursing.
      Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto
      Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
      Master's Degree in Nursing or a related field required

      Preferred Experience:
      Master's Degree in Science of Nursing with concentration in Nursing Administration (MSN/ADM) preferred
      Minimum of three years working as staff nurse in acute med/surg preferred
      Demonstrated mastery of knowledge related to medicine and surgical nursing administration including but not limited to Operating Room,
      Procedural and Interventional areas, Pre and Post Anesthesia care areas, Medical-Surgical Inpatient Units, and Sterile Processing preferred
      Work as an Associate Chief Nurse in the last two years preferred
      Working knowledge required with Information Technology including Excel, Web, Word, and Databases preferred
      Knowledge of VA data sources preferred
      Experience in developing and presenting reports and analysis at various levels of an organization preferred
      Previous experience working with Joint Commission standards and nursing outcomes preferred
      Previous leadership experience preferred
      Previous experience working with and leading interdisciplinary teams preferred
      Previous progressive leadership experience preferred
      Previous staff development and growth experience preferred
      Previous knowledge and work with budgets preferred
      American Heart Association BLS for the healthcare provider


      Grade Determinations:
      The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:

      Nurse IV: Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN [If MSN obtained in a Bridge Program, no BSN required.] OR Doctoral degree
      in nursing or related field AND appropriate basic or advanced certification desired

      Executes leadership that is characterized by substantial and continuous responsibility and accountability for population groups or integrated
      programs that cross service and/or discipline lines and influence organizational mission and health care.
