Responsible for management of the Nursing Department Acute/ED/OB, and other departments as designated.


  • Responsible for employees in area assigned, including scheduling and staffing, training, performance evaluations, and personnel action such as selection, promotion, discipline up to and including discharge within guidelines of Equal Employment Opportunity/Affirmative Action (EEO/AA), and in accordance with collective bargaining agreements and Molokai General Hospital policies and procedures.
  • Establishes objectives for the nursing department, and the organizational structure for achieving these objectives including standards of care, monitoring, and evaluation of standards.
  • Prepares and administers the budget for Nursing, and other departments as designated, including ongoing evaluation of the allocations of fiscal resources as related to the provision of nursing care.
  • Formulates and ensures review of departmental policies and procedures with appropriate input from administration and other professional staff.
  • Coordinates activities of all services to maintain effective communication and relationships between nursing and ancillary staff, medical staff, patients, and the public.
  • Develops and implements an In-Service plan for orientation and continuing education for nursing based on findings of the nursing quality improvement plan and identified needs of clinical staff.
  • Plans, monitors and evaluates the Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) program for nursing.
  • Participates with leaders from governing board, management and medical staff in the hospital's decision making process through regular attendance at and reporting to governing board and medical staff meetings. Participates with the governing board, management and medical staff in defining and evaluating the hospital's mission, strategic plan, budget, resource location and operational policies and procedures.
  • Participates in evaluation and selection of both clinical and non-clinical health care technology to optimize the efficient utilization of nursing services including information management system.
  • Collaborates with nursing education leaders to optimize learning experiences for programs which utilize our clinical facilities.
  • Assist hospital in Infection Control Program with nursing.
  • Participates in appropriate community organizations, task forces committees, etc. to identify community health care needs and perceptions and to facilitate the hospital's involvement in meeting appropriate needs.
  • Seeks ways to update and improve clinical and management skills and developing strategies for nursing care delivery which utilizes current theory.
  • Receives, reviews, and does timely investigation and follow up of Event Forms.
  • Notifies verbally or in writing to the Utilization Review Coordinator of changes in level of care for acute care patients.
  • Demonstrates effective skills of delegation organization and coordination in the management of assigned shifts.
  • Actively supports the goals of and participates in major projects undertaken by the hospital and nursing.
  • Understands union contracts.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality.
  • Actively seeks additional funding sources such as grant writing proposals, etc.
  • Maintains a work environment that provides maximum safety and health, and encourages safety awareness among employees and patients, in accordance with OSHA regulations, the Department of Health, and The Joint Commission accreditation standards. Reports unsafe acts/conditions and injuries/incidents to the Supervisor promptly.



  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing with Bachelor’s Degree.
  • Hawaii State Licensure as a Registered Nurse.
  • BLS/HCP certification.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
  • Minimum three (3) years recent experience in a healthcare field with nursing responsibilities.
  • Minimum three (3) years management experience.  
  • Ability to relate effectively with members of the nursing staff and members of other departments within the hospital, and patients of all ages.
  • Ability to evaluate statistical data and make computations relating to departmental operations and budget.
