Licensed Practical Nurse

The Northeast Ohio VA Healthcare System is recruiting for two Licensed Practical Nurses. The Licensed Practical Nurses will function at the Akron Community Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC) within the Community Outpatient Service (COPS). The Licensed Practical Nurse duties include:Providing direct patient care to Veterans with minimal supervision.

  • Preparing and administering medications, including vaccinations.
  • Collaborating with the Registered Nurse in the assessment and planning of care.
  • Participating in patient care conferences.
  • Participating as a team player - recognizes the importance of supporting peers to provide quality.
  • Maintaining the clinical environment according to environmental and safety standards.
  • Providing health and wellness education in one on one and in group format.
  • Communicating effectively with the Registered Nurse and other health team members.
  • Documenting care timely and appropriately.
  • Providing health and wellness education in individual and group formats, by telephone, electronic and face-to-face encounters.
  • Participating in telehealth video encounters to assist in patient care, as required.
  • Assisting in the completion of point of care laboratory testing, as required.
  • Rooming the patients for a PACT team to include required screenings and data collection.
  • Performing general nursing functions to include procedures such as EKG, bladder scan, etc.
  • Providing support and assistance to various disciplines and specialties such a Podiatry, Pharmacy, Nutrition, Mental Health etc.
  • Assisting in procedure clinics and pelvic exams.
  • Responsible for proper handling and pre-cleaning of reusable medical equipment as well as disposal and handling of dirty and biohazardous materials and instruments.
  • Collaborating with various disciplines to optimize care.
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. or 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m, may work occasional evenings and weekends.

    • Basic Requirements:
      • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
      • Must be a graduate of school of practical or vocational nursing approved by the appropriate State agency and/or accredited by the National League for Nursing. (Education will be waived for current VHA employees who were converted to appointments under 38 U.S.C. 7401(3) in implementation of Public Law 98-160, enacted November 21, 1983, and for VHA employees converted to appointments under 38 U.S.C. 7405 in implementation of Public Law 99-576, enacted October 28, 1986. The waiver will not apply to persons appointed under 38 U.S.C. 7401(3) or 7405 after these conversions.)
      • Must possess a full, active, current and unrestricted licensure as a licensed practical or vocational nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or District of Columbia.
      Preferred Experience:
      • Outpatient/clinic setting experience
      • At least three years of experience as an LPN
      Grade Determinations:
      GS-6: Completion of at least one (1) year of additional qualifying experience at the GS-5 level or equivalent fully meeting all performance requirements for the GS-5 LPN/LVN. This includes but is not limited to: demonstrated knowledge and ability to provide a full range of practical nursing care to patients with a variety of physical and/or behavioral problems; demonstrated ability to serve as a responsible member of the nursing team; knowledge and skill sufficient to prepare, administer, and appropriately document actions taken specific to commonly prescribed oral, topical, subcutaneous, intramuscular, and/or intravenous medications as permitted by approved local facility policies and procedures; knowledge and ability to recognize the need for and to institute emergency measures when indicated, promptly seek the assistance of the RN or MD/DO, and assist in resuscitation procedures in cardiac and/or pulmonary arrest.
