Licensed Practical Nurse

A Licensed Practical Nurse has the knowledge, skills and self direction to carry out and complete nursing procedures, comprehensive patient education, broad assignments and nursing care expected in the outpatient, ambulatory care setting. Duties will include but are not limited to participation in complex ambulatory procedures common to Primary Care, Dermatology, Podiatry and other medical/surgical subspecialty clinics.Duties include (but are not limited to):

  • Implementing treatment modalities in response to chronic and acute medical conditions.
  • Workingunder the guidance of a Registered Nurse (RN) and/or medical provider with general overview by RN or medical staff.
  • Demonstrating competency and possesses knowledge to use the nursing process to appropriately determine clinic needs based upon patient symptoms, history and medical chart entries.
  • Providingpreventative health and chronic disease management and education, and screening inquiries allowed with the practice of nursing and approved by nursing and medical leadership.
  • Adheringto the practice restrictions outlined in state license and facility protocols and policies.
  • Demonstrating practical knowledge of human behavior, motivation and reactions to chronic or acute disease processes. Incumbent performs routines expected of the position and/or competency with minimal oversight to include by not limited to venipuncture, intake and assessment, injections, EKG's, vital signs, photo imaging, education, wound care etc.
  • Performing phlebotomy services: Collecting, processing, preparing, storing, and packaging laboratory specimens.
  • Ensuring safe and non-traumatic processes are used with critical concerns for the donor and for the quality of the specimen.
  • Using standard aseptic procedures and safeguards and practices infection control (Universal Precautions) in the performance of all specimen collection and processing duties.
  • Identifying the patient using two acceptable patient identifiers, review laboratory request for order number, accession lab orders, and ensure proper labeling and integrity of patient samples.
  • Recording and maintaining all quality controls, operating and maintaining the centrifuge and required refrigeration/cooling equipment.
  • Recognizingthe need for optimal customer service and immediate service recovery to promote the optimum patient experience.
  • Takingall necessary precautions to avoid the spread of illness or disease when administering care to patients.

This is a bargaining unit position

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday; Days and Evenings; 7:00AM to 3:30PM and/or 7:30AM to 4:00PM (as patient care dictates)

    • Basic Requirements:

      U.S. citizenship. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

      Education: Graduate of a school of practical or vocational nursing approved by the appropriate State agency and/or accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) at the time the program was completed by the applicant. Exceptions include: Health care education in the military service or training in the military service which is accepted by the licensing body in the jurisdiction in which the individual is licensed as qualifying for full LPN/LVN licensure will be accepted as meeting the education requirements for VHA employment; Individuals granted a license by a jurisdiction that does not require graduation from an approved school.

      Licensure: Full, active, current and unrestricted licensure as a licensed practical or vocational nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or District of Columbia.Physical Standards: Must meet the physical standard in VA Directive and Handbook 5019.

      English Language Proficiency: Licensed practical or vocational nurses appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in both spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d).

      Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

      Grade Determinations: A minimum of one year of qualifying experience as a GS-5 or fully meeting all performance requirements for the GS-5 LPN.
