Duties

As a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN - Primary Care) at the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Gulf Coast Veterans Health Care System (GCVHCS), Nursing Service, Outpatient Services, located in Biloxi, MS or Pensacola, FL, the incumbent serves as member of the health care team providing care and treatment to Veterans. The LPN completes assigned duties and responsibilities, which involve performing non-standard and specialized practical nursing activities, requiring broad work experience and demonstrated skill sufficient to resolve a range of nursing problems.

Duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Provides a full range of practical nursing care to patients with a variety of physical and/or behavioral problems.
  • Assist with and transfer patients in, to, and form the exam table, wheelchair, chair and/or stretcher. Escorts patients to appointments within the hospital and off-station as assigned. Utilizes safe patient handling (SPH) equipment as appropriate to prevent injury to peers, patients and self.
  • Prepares, administers and appropriately documents actions taken specific to commonly prescribed oral, topical, subcutaneous, intramuscular, intradermal, and/or intravenous medications as permitted by approved local facility policies and procedures.
  • Applies proper medical and surgical aseptic techniques, as well as isolation precautions in performance of patient care and maintenance of a safe environment.
  • Corrects or reports safety hazards and enforces smoking regulations.
  • Serves as a responsible member of the nursing team and interacts in an appropriate manner with patients, family members, professional and other supportive personnel involved in the delivery of patient care through the use of acceptable and establish customer service standards.
  • Interacts with patients according to the Patient Bill of Rights, VA Code of Patient Concerns, and Nursing Service philosophy to provide holistic care to patients.
  • Maintains general cleanliness and order within the patient's and staff's immediate environment and encourages patients and staff to take pride in their environment.
  • Accurately reports and documents in the medical record patient findings and care provided.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM

    • Basic Requirements:
      United States Citizenship:
      Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
      Education: Graduate of a school of practical or vocational nursing approved by the appropriate State accrediting agency and/or the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC/www.nlnac.org) at the time the program was completed by the applicant. OR Health care education in the military service or training in the military service which is accepted by the licensing body in the jurisdiction in which the individual is licensed as an LPN/LVN licensure will be accepted as meeting the education requirements for VHA employment.
      Licensure: Full, active, current and unrestricted licensure as a [ ] licensed practical or vocational nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or District of Columbia.
      Physical Standards: Licensed Practical Nurses appointed to direct patient care positions must undergo a pre-employment physical as required by VA policies and procedures.
      English Language Proficiency: Licensed practical or vocational nurses appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in [both] spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d).

      Preferred Experience: Preferred Experience: In addition to the basic qualification requirements, applicants must have demonstrated evidence of the following knowledge, skills, and abilities determined to be essential for satisfactory performance in the position.
      • At least two (2) years clinical experience as an LPN is preferred.
      • Outpatient experience is desired.
      • Ability to practice cooperative and professional interpersonal communications with diverse multidisciplinary teams.
      • Ability to work with patients exhibiting a variety of physical problems.
      • Ability to collect and record a variety of patient data in a computer based electronic medical record system.
      • Ability to perform direct nursing care in compliance with organization standards, policies, procedures, and guidelines.
      • Skilled in patient and family education for patient medications and disease processes.
      • Ability to work with Mental Health patients with behavioral problems
      • Current license and BLS certification.

      Grade Determinations: In addition to the basic requirements, the following qualification criteria must be met for each grade. The candidate's qualifications must clearly demonstrate the level of competence required for the grade.

      GS-05: Completion of at least one (1) year of qualifying experience at the GS-04 level or equivalent.

      GS-06: Completion of at least one (1) year of additional qualifying experience at the GS-05 level or equivalent, fully meeting all performance requirements for the GS-5 LPN/LVN.

      Qualifying experience is successful nursing practice as an LPN/LVN, maintaining acceptable standards within a health care setting under the direction of a registered nurse (RN) or physician (MD/DO). To be creditable, practical nursing experience (as an LPN or LVN) must be documented on the application and verified in an employment reference or through other independent means.

      Part-time experience is credited according to the relationship it bears to the full-time work week (e.g., an LPN/LVN who worked 20 hours per week, i.e., half-time,would receive 1 full-time work week of credit for each 2 weeks of such service).
