Nurse Manager - Progressive Care Unit (PCU)

The VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System (VAGLAHS) is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Registered Nurse to serve as the Nurse Manager for the Progressive Care Unit (PCU). The Nurse Manager executes a position responsibility that demonstrates leadership, experience and ingenious approaches to management of complex patient care. The Nurse Manager is accountable for the management of patient care, human, fiscal and material resources, and the total environment of the unit on a twenty-four hour basis. He/she is responsible to ensure that the highest possible quality of care is achieved and that a safe therapeutic environment is provided. The Nurse Manager is responsible to theChief Nurse, Medical Surgical and Critical Care.

Please note that this position is not open to novice nurses.

Job duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

Facilitates an atmosphere of interactive management and the development of collegial relationships among nursing personnel and other team members.

Promotes a Just Culture environment in building a climate for effective performance while allocating available resources to promote safe, efficient, effective, and quality nursing/patient care.

Observes and evaluates the quality of nursing care provided including interdisciplinary patient rounds, reviewing nursing documentation in clinical records, and collecting, reviewing, and analyzing data related to the delivery of patient care.

Assure the compliance with all regulatory agencies and standards of practice and implementation of required actions to meet Performance Measures.

Provides leadership in the application of the nursing process to patient care, organizational processes and systems, and improves outcomes at the program or service level.

Initiates an educational plan to meet changing program or service needs for self and staff.

Provides leadership in identifying and addressing ethical issues with patients and staff, including initiating and participating in ethical consultations.

Initiates interdisciplinary projects to improve organizational performance.

Implements an educational plan to meet changing programs or service needs for self and others.

Maintains knowledge of current techniques, trends and professional issues.

Coaches colleagues in team building.

Contributes to the strategic planning process, day-to-day operations, and attainment of goals of the organization.

Ability to provide direct patient care to an assigned group of patients as needed.

Work Schedule:Monday - Friday8 hourDay Shift 7:00 am - 3:30 pm with work days/hours flexibility required as patient care needs require. This position has 24 hour accountability.

    • Basic Requirements:

      • U.S. citizenship. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
      • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia
      • Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration AND degree equivalency documentation will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6)
      • English Language Proficiency

      Preferred Experience:

    • Masters in Nursing (MSN) preferred
    • Note: Only education or degrees recognized by the U.S. Department of Education from accredited colleges, universities, schools, or institutions may be used to qualify for Federal employment. You can verify your education here: http://ope.ed.gov/accreditation/. If you are using foreign education to meet qualification requirements, you must send a Certificate of Foreign Equivalency with your transcript in order to receive credit for that education

    • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from one of the following: American Heart Association - Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers OR the Military Training Network (MTN) Provider Certificate/Card
    • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification
    • At least 3 years of continuous, successful ICU and/or Critical Care Adult Nursing experience
    • At least 3 years of successful nursing practice as a nurse leader (Nurse Manager, Acting Nurse Manager, Charge Nurse or Team Leader) preferred
    • Evidence of self-direction or organizational skills
    • Evidence of effectively educating patients and patient families
    • Preferred Certification:

      • Critical Care Registered Nurse (CCRN)- ANCC
      • Progressive Care Certified Nurse(PCCN) - ANCC

      Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

      Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Registered Nurses employed by the Veterans Affairs earn annual leave at a rate of8 hours per pay period and earn sick leave at a rate of 4 hours per pay period.

      VA may offer newly-appointed Federal employees credit for their job-related non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave.
