Nurse Practitioner (Ortho)

The incumbent serves as the Nurse Practitioner for outpatient and inpatient Surgical Clinics and units located in the Surgical Health Care Group (HCG) and is directly accountable to the Chief of Surgical, Patient Services. Primary responsibilities will be scheduled patient care in the clinic which operates daily. Additional duties may include inpatient consultation service and first responder to consultations from the emergency department. While Board Certified Orthopedic Attendings are always present for consultation, it is expected that the NP will function independently in patient management matters. Proficiency in casting and bracing is mandatory.

The incumbent has overall accountability and responsibility providing treatment and care to patients including, but not limited to, complete history and physical examinations, performs intake and diagnostic interviews and treatment of their pre/post-operative care needs in collaboration with the attending physicians. He/she provides leadership in discharge planning in collaboration with the members of the team, patient's families, and/or conservator. The incumbent will be expected to order appropriate diagnostic tests and therapeutic interventions. Provide medication management as well as educate patients about all interventions; practices within the guidelines as established through the credentialing and privileging process, utilize the expertise of attending physicians as indicated and evaluates care provided; and provides leadership on the interdisciplinary team in assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating health care for the patient population being served. The incumbent provides care to patients and demonstrates advanced assessment and decision making. Additionally, the incumbent will actively initiate performance improvement activities and demonstrate leadership in collaborative work with the members of the team; encourage, support, facilitate, and participate in research activities and applies research findings to clinical practice; and demonstrate ability to establish relationships with professional and/or health groups within the community.

We are a 24/7 medical center, incumbents may be expected towork nights, weekends, holidays, and off-tour to meet our Veteran's needs.

      • Registration Current, full, active and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the U.S. or in the District of Columbia. The RN must maintain a current, full active and unrestricted registration to continue employment with the VA
      • Educational requirements can be met as follows:

      (1) Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State agency, and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed: a) The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC); or b) The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). OR

      (2) The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. OR

      (3) In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active, and unrestricted registration, will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.

      • Applicants must hold a Master's of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree, and be certified at the national level as a Family Nurse Practitioner.
      • Applicants musthave a current, valid DEA #

      The following requirements are preferred for this position:

      • At a minimum, applicants should possess experience as an RN that is determined to be sustained and consistently at or above an acceptable level of quality.This may include experience as a Graduate Nurse Technician (GNT) provided the candidate was utilized as a professional nurse and passed the State licensing (board) examination on the first attempt, and experience as Nurse Technician Pending Graduation provided the candidate possessed an active, current registration to practice nursing in a State and was utilized as a professional nurse. Professional nursing experience should be documented on the Application for Employment Nurse and Nurse Anesthetists (VA Form 10-2850a).
