The El Paso VAHCS is part of VISN 17 Network, and is a complexity Level2 standalone ambulatory care facility with over 950 employees and growing. El Paso VA Health Care System serves Veterans in far Southwest Texas and Dona Ana County, New Mexico. The El Paso VA Health Care System provides primary and specialized ambulatory care services at the main campus with consultants and fee-basis specialists supplementing the medical staff. The Health Care System serves Veterans residing in 8 Counties with an enrolled Veteran Population of over 73,000. We are an out-patient clinic with working hours from 8:00 am to 4:45 pm, Mondays through Fridays.

This is an opportunity to move to the Great Southwest, where shopping and museums are abundant and located conveniently in town. Positions available in El Paso VA health Care System main facility, El Paso CBOCS, and Las Cruces, NM.

Duties

The incumbent will serve as a Nurse Practitioner in Primary Care for the Patient Aligned Care Team (PACT).

Works with a multidisciplinary team including physicians, nursing, social work, dietician, clinical pharmacist, behavioral health and clerical support.

He/she will perform and record history and physical examinations and record data from clinic visit.

Evaluates, consults, develops diagnosis, and manages the primary care panel of patients assigned.

Enters progress notes in computerized medical record and completes workload documentation in a timely manner.

Provides medical care encompassing acute and chronic medical conditions and all appropriate preventive care for patients.

Order diagnostic tests, medications, laboratory tests as medically relevant for each patient.

Provides timely follow-up on results, including completion of view alerts.

Determines medical assessment and develop treatment plans according to accepted protocols.

Prescribes medication according to approved formulary, and in accordance with Federal and State Law.

May collaborate with an assigned mid-level provider and complete collaborative case reviews as assigned.

Work Schedule: Monday through Friday 8:00am to 4:45pm

    • BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
      • U.S. citizenship. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
      • Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
        • The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6)
      • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
      • A nurse practitioner must be licensed or otherwise recognized as a nurse practitioner in a State, possess a master's degree from a program accredited by the NLNAC or CCNE, and maintain full and current certification as a nurse practitioner from the American Nurses Association or another nationally recognized certifying body. [The certification must be in the specialty to which the individual is being appointed or selected.]

      Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:

      Nurse II -Master's degree in nursing; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.

      Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing OR Doctoral degree in nursing or related field and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience.


      Preferred Experience: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-6 Nurse Qualification Standard.This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.

      Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
