Major Duties

The VA Eastern Kansas Health Care system (EKHCS) is a tertiary care health system providingEmergency Care, Inpatient and Outpatient Care, Research, Domiciliary Care, Nursing Home Care, and Geriatric Care to a 45-county primary service area which spans throughout Northeastern and Central Kansas and Missouri. EKHCS consists of two divisions: the Colmery-O'Neil Medical Center in Topeka, Kansas, and the Dwight D. Eisenhower Medical Center, located in Leavenworth, Kansas, as well as multiple Community Based Outpatient Clinics across the service area.

PCMHI is a component of the interprofessional Patient Aligned Care Team (PACT). The PCMHI role is to provide support for Primary care providers and the rest of the PACT to assure that the mental and behavioral health needs of the primary care population are addressed. Often, this means that PCMHI staff will take the lead in providing mental health care for individuals identified with mental health conditions or in need of assistance making health-related behavioral changes.

This vacancy announcement is fortwo (2) positions with the Behavioral Health Service of the VA Eastern Kansas Health Care System. One position will be stationed in Leavenworth, KS and the other will be stationed in Topeka, KS. In this role, you will function as aNurse Practitioneroutpatient Mental Health Treatment Program, which is part of the EKHCSPsychiatric Section.

Major dutiesmayinclude, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Initiate medication and either treat to target or support Primary Care Providers (PCP) continuation of medication, either directly or by supervision of care management.
  • Performs direct in-person or virtual face to face assessment and treatment when indicated. This included a mental status examination.
  • Provides chart based consultations.
  • Provides formal education sessions to other team members.
  • Provides ongoing training, supervision and backup for care management (CM). This generally includes at least weekly meetings to discuss all patients receiving CM services.
  • Initiates and manages medication assisted treatment (MAT) for substance use disorders (SUDs) for patients whose care can be managed in PACT with PCMHI support.
  • Works closely with other mental health clinics and staff to identify patients whose episode of illness has been successfully treated to plan termination from specialty care and return to PACT for long term follow-up.

Work Schedule: Primary Monday-Friday day shift, however incumbent may be responsible for providing on-call coverage and coverage on off-tours (including nights, weekends and holidays) based on the needs of the organization. The incumbent may be asked to assist in other sub-specialty areas within the department.

      • Educational requirements can be met as follows: Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State agency, and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed: a) The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC); or b) The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active, and unrestricted registration, will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
      • License and Registration A nurse practitioner must be licensed or otherwise recognized as a nurse practitioner in a State, Territory, Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. License must be current, full, active and unrestricted.
      • Certification Nurse Practitioners must maintain full and current certification as a nurse practitioner from the American Nurses Association or another nationally recognized certifying body. The certification must be in the specialty to which the individual is being appointed or selected.
