Nurse Practitioner (Surgical)

The Nurse Practitioner position isin the SurgicalService, at the VA Central CA Healthcare System (VACCHCS), Fresno,CA.

Nurse Practitioner (NP) will be an advanced practice provider for Surgical Service and a member of the Specialty Care Neighborhood model.The NP will reportto the Chief of Surgeryand functions as an agent of the surgeon.The midlevel provider will be fully qualified and certified to function in both a clinical and administrative role and in accordance with the guidelines and policies of the VA Central California Healthcare System. This individual is delegated the authority and responsibility to assume clinical, consultation, educational, research, and administrative duties and responsibilities related to the patients and staff of the Surgical Service.In conjunction with the staff surgeons, the NP will prioritize, delegate, and engage in facility performance measures in an effort to provide excellent care delivery processes in an efficient and safe manner. This position requires on-call duties and critical decision making capacity in the delivery of surgical care. The following items cover the most significant duties performed but do not exclude other responsibilities which may be assigned.

  • Providing effective care to patients characterized using sound judgment in assessing, planning, implementing, documenting and evaluation patient care for assigned patients.
  • Applyingthe skill and competency to obtain thorough medical histories, perform comprehensive physical examination, order appropriate diagnostic studies, interpret and analyze medical data, establish diagnoses, formulate and implement treatment plans and modify treatment plans when appropriate.
  • Assisting in the Operating Room and performing perioperative procedures/interventions as needed.
  • Evaluating outpatients to determine need for further health care.
  • Facilitating continuity of care between services and best practices in healthcare delivery for surgical patients.
  • Utilizing group processes to identify, analyze, and resolve care problems.
  • Demonstrating leadership by involving others in improving care.
  • Educating colleagues and/or students by serving as a preceptor and/or mentor

Work Schedule: Full-time, Monday-Friday; 8:00am-4:30pm, with some call.

    • BASIC REQUIREMENTS:

      • U.S. citizenship. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
      • Current, full, active, and unrestricted license as a Nurse Practitioner in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
      • Master's Degree from a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
      • Current, full, active, and unrestricted certification as a Nurse Practitioner from the American Nurses Associated or another nationally certifying body.
      Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
      • Nurse I Level III - A Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.
      • Nurse II - AMaster's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
      • Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or related field and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience.

      Preferred Experience:

      • 1-3 years of surgical experience

      Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
