The Bay Pines VA Healthcare System (VAHCS) is located on 337 acres situated on the Gulf of Mexico in Bay Pines, FL. The Bay Pines VAHCS is part of the VISN 8 Sunshine Healthcare Network and services the healthcare needs of America's Veterans in West Central and Southwestern coastal Florida. BPVAHCS provides care to a veteran population of more than one million in Florida and treats approximately 98,000 unique veterans annually. The medical center serves as a referral center for this area with 397 operating beds with care provided in almost all medical and surgical specialties and subspecialties as well as inpatient residential and long term care. Bay Pines, Florida is home to several beaches and parks. Florida is known as the "Sunshine" state with an average of approximately 240 days of sunshine a year! The area boasts numerous extracurricular activities and sporting events each year with three major sports franchises represented within the Tampa Bay area. Enjoy a moderate cost of living, beautiful weather year round, numerous beaches and a wide range of activities to experience. Theme parks and other state attractions are all within driving distance. Duties

The incumbent serves as a Nursing Assistant in the Nursing Service-Acute Care Unit, at the C.W. Bill Young Bay Pines VA Healthcare System, Bay Pines, Florida. As a Nursing Assistant, you will assist Physicians and Nurses in the care and treatment of Veterans receiving medical, surgical, and inpatient treatment. Major duties include, but not limited to:

  • Observes and reports to the professional nurse changes in patient behavior, attitude, bodily complaints, and appearance.
  • Performs simple treatment procedures such as changing non-sterile dressings; applying or removing binders, arm slings, dressing, and bandages.
  • Applying hot and cold packs.
  • Performs standardized treatment procedures such as: applying external catheters, performing oral suction/trach, or monitoring the flow of oxygen.
  • Observes patients for change in condition (deviation in color, pulse, respiration, temperature, and blood pressure) and reports them to the nurse.
  • Reports condition of wounds and skin, and reaction to or results of treatments.
  • Obtain veterans' vital signs, weights, intake/outputs and enters them in the patients' records in CPRS.
  • Enters progress notes onto the patients' records or charts.
  • Performs a wide variety of duties aimed at increasing the comfort and spirit of the patient.
  • Transports patients via wheel chair or gurney, and/or accompanies ambulatory patients who need assistance, to various areas within the medical center including clinics, diagnostic areas, and treatment areas.
  • Provide personal care duties or Activity of Daily Living (ADL) such as bathing or feeding patients.
  • Takes care of patient's non-routine care and comfort needs for psycho/social/spiritual well being, personal hygiene, physical comfort, nutrition, elimination, prevention of skin breakdown, rehabilitation, and/or restorative nursing care and safety, etc.
  • Teaches patients and family members the necessity to continue the procedures for proper health care.
  • Assists with general health education, e.g., reminds patients/family/care providers of importance of skin care and position changes.

    • Basic Requirements:
      • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
      • English language proficiency - Must be proficient in spoken and written English.
      • Education or Training. One year about high school with courses related to the Nursing Assistant occupation.Completion of an intensive, specialized, occupation-related course of study of less than one year as a Nursing Assistant may also meet in full the experience requirements for GS-03.
      Grade Determinations:

      GS-3 (Entry Level):
      Experience and Education: None beyond the Basic Requirements. Individuals assigned as GS-3 Nursing Assistants are considered to be at the entry level and are closely supervised.

      GS-04:
      In addition to the Basic Requirements above, to qualify for this position at the GS-4 level, you must meet one of the following requirements:

      Experience: You must have at least one (1) full year of specialized experience as a Nursing Assistant or experience in another medical field (licensed practical nurse, health technician, hospital corpsman, etc.), performing technical and nursing skills requiring knowledge of the human physical and emotional states, therapeutic communication, and technical skills required for basic and intermediate treatments.
      OR
      Education: Successful completion of two (2) years of education above high school in an accredited institution with courses related to nursing care, health care or in a field of study appropriate to the specialization of the Nursing Assistant position, such as education in a program for psychology, psychiatric, or operating room technicians. NOTE: Transcripts (unofficial or official) must be submitted with your application materials. Education cannot be credited without documentation.
      AND
      In addition to the experience or education above, at the GS-4 level, you must fully demonstrate the knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs) below:
      1. Ability to provide a range of patient/resident care and contribute to the completion of the nurse care plan and recovery of patients/residents.
      2. Ability to observe patients/residents' or resident's physical or emotional status and refer deviations and/or problems to supervisor in a timely manner.
      3. Ability to properly use equipment, materials and supplies in simple diagnostic and treatment procedures such as bladder scan, continuous passive motion device, blood glucose monitoring machine, specimen collection, etc.
      4. Ability to communicate effectively with patients/residents, their families and other health professionals.
      GS-05 (Full Performance Level):

      In addition to the Basic Requirements above, to qualify for this position at the GS-5 level, you must meet one of the following requirements:

      Experience: You must have at least one (1) full year of progressively responsible assignments and experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-4) which demonstrates knowledge, skills, and abilities that are directly related to the Nursing Assistant specific assignment.
      OR
      Education: Successful completion of four (4) year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree that included 24 semester hours of courses related to health care or possession of a bachelor's degree. NOTE: Transcripts (unofficial or official) must be submitted with your application materials. Education cannot be credited without documentation.
      AND
      In addition to the experience or education above, at the GS-5 level, you must fully demonstrate the knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs) below:
      1. Ability to assist in the full range of nursing care to patients/residents with physical and/or behavioral problems in a hospital, long term care or outpatient setting under the direction of a Registered Nurse and/or Licensed Vocational Nurse/Licensed Practical Nurse.
      2. Ability to communicate in person with patients/residents, families, interdisciplinary team and other personnel. This includes serving as a preceptor to new Nursing Assistants by assisting with the coordination of their orientation and overseeing/assessing their practical experience while in a clinical setting.
      3. Ability to recognize and react to emergent patient/resident care situations and intervene while waiting for assistance. For example, recognizing need for basic life support, controlling bleeding and assisting with behavior crisis, etc.
