The Alaska VA Healthcare System (AVAHS) is a Joint Commission accredited, complexity level 3 facility serving Veterans throughout Alaska. The parent facility is located in Anchorage, Alaska and is adjacent to the 673d Medical Group, Joint Base Elmendorf Richardson which is a VA/DoD Joint Venture Hospital. We manage four VA Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOC), located in Fairbanks (358 miles north of Anchorage), Kenai (158 miles south of Anchorage), Wasilla (41 miles north of Anchorage) and Juneau (569 air miles from Anchorage). We manage a VA Outreach clinic located in Homer and served by staff from the Kenai VA CBOC We also manage a 50 bed Domiciliary for homeless veteran's located in downtown Anchorage. Anchorage is a mid-sized city of approximately 292,000, with all of the modern amenities expected, including shopping, dining, cultural opportunities, entertainment, and public transportation. Leave the traffic jams and commuter stress behind and enjoy the scenic mountains or Cook Inlet views as you travel around the area. Within 15-20 minutes you can be in the Alaska wilderness of the Chugach National and State Forests, with little evidence of civilization. Hunting, fishing, camping, hiking, boating, skiing, climbing, golf, tennis, recreational leagues and wildlife photography are all pursuits available in or near Anchorage. The University of Alaska Anchorage provides educational opportunities for continued personal education and growth.

Alaska has no state income tax and Anchorage has no sales tax.

Positions in Alaska receive a tax free Cost of Living Allowance (COLA) in addition to the base salary. The COLA for Anchorage is currently 4.22% and is subject to change in the future.





Duties

The Psychiatric Advanced Nurse Practitioner (ANP) is responsible for the day to day operational issues in relation to providing mental health services for Veterans at the Fairbanks CBOC. The ANP Provides direct psychiatric services at some or all of the Alaska VA Healthcare System care sites as well as part of their duties via Tele-mental Health. Duties of this position include but are not limited to:

Ensures quality measures are maintained as defined by the Performance Measures Technical Manual and other applicable standards or guidelines;
Ensures that quality measure fall outs from External Peer Review Program (EPRP) audits are reviewed and appealed as appropriate in a timely fashion;
Must possess interpersonal and clinical skills to provide primary mental health care for Veterans;
Conducts history and physical exams and mental status exams on Veterans;
Completes intake assessments and formulates diagnosis;
Develops and presents treatment plans with multidisciplinary teams
Orders all necessary laboratory and radiological assessments;
Initiates and processes consults and provide referrals as indicated;
Provide care via tele-mental health;
Provides pharmacotherapy as indicated in the treatment plan and psychotherapy as needed;
Maintains effective and up-to-date documentation of patient encounters;
Provides mental health treatment to Veterans during regular clinic business hours;
Participates in professional and administrative activities as signed;
Ensures completion of psychosocial evaluation, assessment, and periodic reassessments of Veterans for appropriate placement along the Mental Health continuum of care;
Participates in staff meetings and/or National or VISN level calls and trainings as appropriate;
Participates in developing quality improvement.

Work schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Some evenings, weekends and on-call responsibilities may be required. Flexible schedules may be considered.

      Education: Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the
      following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Please note: Certificate of Professional Nursing will need to be submitted.

      In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.

      Licensure: Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.

      A Nurse Practitioner must be licensed or otherwise recognized as a nurse practitioner in a State, Possess a Master's Degree from a program accredited by the NLNAC or CCNE, and must maintain a full and current certification as a Nurse Practitioner from the American Nurses Association or another nationally recognized certifying body. The certification must be in the area Adult Psychiatric & Mental Health.

      Preferred Experience: Psychiatric nursing experience in a hospital/clinical setting.

      Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:

      Nurse II - Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.

      Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or related field and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience.

      Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
