Registered Nurse (Behavioral Health Interdisciplinary Program/Video Telehealth)

The Behavioral Health Interdisciplinary Program (BHIP)/Video Telehealth (VTEL) mental health nurse is a registered nurse responsible for coordination of care for veterans who are utilizing mental health VTEL services within the South Texas Health Care System. The RN will be the focal point of contact for patients receiving mental health care via VTEL. The RN will function as the Mental Health Treatment Coordinator (MHTC) for the assigned telehealth panel. The RN will provide care coordination in collaboration with the VTEL providers, as well as provide coverage to the other mental health areas as needed. The RN will demonstrate a therapeutic relationship with the acute and chronic mentally ill patient by focusing attention on the emotional and behavioral concerns through a mutually defined professional relationship. The RN performs structured clinical assessments and complex, systematic psychiatric assessments which include the total health status of the patient. This requires knowledge of medical terminology, diagnostic categories, and ability to perform chart reviews, complete clinical reminders, and initiate suicide risk assessments as needed. The RN begins the coordination process at the time the patient is identified for VTEL and works collaboratively with assigned VTEL provider staff in Mental Health, as well as staff throughout the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) facility that may also be involved in his/her care. The RN reviewsthe electronic health recordfor appropriateness of VTEL enrollment into Clinical Video Telehealth (CVT) into Home Program. The RN will provide triage of the VTEL patients as needed and coordinate medication compliance/medication refills with the assigned VTEL providers. The RN reviews assessments completed by others, and obtains missing information from providers, patients and medical records. The RN will demonstrate leadership in utilizing verbal and behavioral treatment modalities. The RN will initiate patient and family education to include information about mental illness, medication, benefits and consequences of behaviors, coping strategies, evaluations and assessments and legal treatment modalities. This includes the development of an appropriate treatment plan and/or safety plan for patients, and the ability to communicate that plan to the patient's provider. The RN will demonstrates extensive oral and written communication skills: contacts patients through written correspondence, secure messaging and telephone calls, and conducts follow-up interviews and creates and maintains forms, surveys, instruments, and materials for proper coordination of the different treatment modules available. The RN will demonstrate appropriate use of a computer. The RN must be willing to be placed, detailed, or temporarily assigned to other BHIP Teams and/or locations, if necessary.The main office for this position is located at One-Tech, with VTEL coverage at selected STVHCS sites throughout San Antonio.

Work Schedule: Monday, Tuesday and Friday 0730-1600, Wednesday and Thursday 10:00-6:30, and rotating Saturdays 08:00-4:30. Applicant must be flexible with work schedule to adjust to the needs of the VTEL Clinics.

Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
      • Licensure. Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
      • English Proficiency. Must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7407(d).


      Grade Determinations:
      The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:

      • Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
      • Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience.
      • Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.
      • Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.

      Preferred Experience: BSN degree or higher, minimum 3-years psychiatric/mental health nursing patient care experience.
