The Coronary Intensive Care Unit is an 8-bed cardiac care unit that delivers intensive care to adult male/female patients experiencing Acute Coronary Syndrome (unstable angina, myocardial infarction, or require thrombolytic therapy), Congestive Heart Failure or Cardiogenic Shock. In addition, care is provided for patients that have undergone invasive cardiac procedures, such as balloon angioplasty, directional coronary atherectomy, laser atherectomy, placement of intracoronary stents, pacemaker implants, radiofrequency ablations, or automatic implantable cardiac defibrillators in the Cardiac Catheterization Lab or the Electrophysiology Lab. Treatment modalities include hemodynamic monitoring, intra-aortic balloon pump counter pulsation, temporary and external pacemaker, pharmacologic therapies, and ventilator support.
Four Most Common Patient Problems Requiring Nursing Care:
1. Acute Coronary Syndrome
2. Congestive Heart Failure
3. Cardiogenic Shock
4. Post invasive cardiac procedures.

Work Schedule: 12-hours Night Shift 7:30 pm- 8:00 am, Rotating Weekends.

    • Basic Requirements:
      • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
      • Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
      • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
      Preferred Qualifications:
      Minimum of two years' cardiac intensive care or other critical care experience.
      Demonstrated ability to work effectively with patients, families and other members of the interdisciplinary team.
      Demonstrated skills in decision-making, sound clinical judgment and critical-thinking abilities.
      Demonstrated ability to use computer systems in support of patient care delivery.
      Prior VA experience.

      ANCC for Cardiac-Vascular Nursing
      ANCC for Critical Care RN

      Grade Determinations: Your salary, grade and step will be set by a Professional Standards board in accordance with VA Handbook 5005/27 Part II, Appendix G6, Nurse Qualification Standard
