Registered Nurse: Community Living Center Staff Nurse

The Staff Nurse provides direct and indirect nursing care in a self-directed manner to residents and families in the Community Living Center (CLC), caring for Veterans requiring long term care, dementia care, palliative care, hospice care, rehabilitation, continuing care, restorative care, skilled nursing, respite, and geriatric evaluation and management. He/she is accountable for adhering to established policies, standards of care and standards of practice related to the provision of care supportive to or restorative of life and well-being. The incumbent is actively involved in the residents' plan of care in maintaining or restoring their functional capacity by evaluating and or recommending rehabilitative, therapeutic activities, and exercises based on medical and social history of the residents. He or she assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates care based on age-specific components, assuming responsibility for the coordination of care focused on resident transition through the continuum of care, Veteran/ resident, and family education, resident self-management after discharge, and supporting factors that impact customer satisfaction. The incumbent reports directly to the Nurse Manager of the resident care unit/area and functions as team leader and charge nurse under the supervision of the Nurse Manager or designee.

Work Schedule: Days, Nights, Evenings with Rotating 8 Hour Shifts

    • Basic Requirements:

      U.S. citizenship. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

      Education: Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6).

      Licensure: Current, full, active, and unrestricted licensure as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.

      EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

      Nurse I, Level III: Associate Degree or Diploma in Nursing with approximately 2-3 years of experience(OR) Associate Degree or Diploma in Nursing and bachelor's degree in a related field with1-2 years of experience (OR)BSN with approximately 1-2 years of experience(OR)Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN or bachelor's degree in a related field[If MSN obtained in a Bridge program no BSN required]

      Nurse II: BSN with 2-3 years of experience (OR) Associate Degree or Diploma in Nursing and bachelors degree in a related field with 2-3 years of experience (OR) Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN or bachelor's degree in a related field with approximately 1-2 years of experience [if MSN obtained in a Bridge program no BSN required] OR Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in related field.

      Nurse III: Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN or bachelor's degree in a related field with 2-3 years of experience [if MSN obtained in a Bridge Program, no BSN required] (OR) Doctoral degree in nursing or related field with 2-3 years of experience

      Grade Determinations: Experience as an RN will be evaluated to determine if the experience is of an acceptable level of quality with regard to the following four dimensions of nursing: Practice, Professional Development, Collaboration and Scientific Inquiry. Each dimensionor practice has criteria that demonstrate essential core competencies for VHA Nursing Personnel

      Waiver of NLNAC or CCNE Accreditation Requirement. The approving official may authorize a waiver of the requirement for NLNAC or CCNE Accreditation of any degree in nursing provided the college or university has regional accreditation (or was State approved) at the time of the candidate's graduation and the composite qualifications of the applicant warrant such consideration. Waivers at the doctoral level are not required; however, the program must be regionally accredited at the time of the candidate's graduation.

      Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
