Registered Nurse - Emergency Department

The Sioux Falls VA Health Care System is currently recruiting forFull-time,Night shift, Permanent, Registered Nurse -Emergency Department(ED).This position will be located in the Primary and Specialty Medicine Service Line.Nursing care is the dynamic and skilled application of a systematic body of knowledge to the diagnosis and treatment of actual or potential health problems. Competent nursing care is provided in the context of the nursing process, which encompasses all significant action taken by the nurse in providing care, and forms the foundation of clinical decision-making. Nursing care must be individualized to meet a particular patient's unique needs and situations.As a Registered Nurse - ED, you are responsible for the following to include, but not limited to:

  • Supports the medical center's mission and core values.
  • Provides excellent customer service to all internal and external customers consistent with ICARE values.
  • Provide emergency and urgent care to patients with acute symptoms requiring immediate and/or prompt intervention.
  • Provide care to critically ill medical patients, may of who have multi-system failure requiring the staff nurse to be proficient in emergency measures, ECG interpretation, titration of multiple critical infusions, ventilator management, invasive procedures, conscious sedation, management of alcohol withdraw and psychiatric emergencies, etc.
  • Responsible and accountable for all elements of the nursing process when providing and/or supervising direct patient care.
  • Administers medications and procedures per established policy guidelines.
  • Provides efficient care triaging patients according to Emergency Severity Index and established protocols.
  • Considers all characteristics of the individual, including sex and role identification, age and life stage, state of health, race and culture, socio-economic status, values and previous experience with similar events, in order to assist each patient to identify and meet basic health needs and improve his/her health status to the individual's maximum potential.
  • Participates in unit/program level quality improvement processes and initiatives, as well as, the customer service program.
  • Demonstrates and maintains full competency in the use, pre-cleaning and/or reprocessing of reusable medical equipment
  • Previous Emergency Department experience required.
  • ACLS required.
  • Certified Emergency Nurse, Certified Flight Registered Nurse or Critical Care RN certification preferred.

NOTE: Assignment to other areas of the service line, medical center, or other CBOC's may be required. The Registered Nurse reports to theICU Nurse Manager, however, assignments may be made to other areas for purposes of cross coverage.

Work Schedule: The tour of duty for this position is primarily straight Nights. Weekends, holidays, evenings will be required.

To accommodate coverage, day shifts may occasionally be required.Flexibility in tours and assignments is

required.Additional information regarding the work schedule of this position will be discussed during the interview process.

    • Basic Requirements

      • Citizen of the United States.
      • Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
        - The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6)
      • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
      • Must be proficient in spoken and written English.

      Grade Determination: Applicant's education and length of nursing practice (experience) will be considered by a Nurse Professional Standards Board in determining the grade and salary of the applicant selected. The recommended salary may be at any point in the range listed for this vacancy.

      Experience as a RN will be evaluated to determine if the experience is of an acceptable level of quality with regard to the following four dimensions of nursing: Practice, Professional Development, Collaboration and Scientific Inquiry. Each dimension of practice has criteria that demonstrate essential core competencies for VHA Nursing Personnel.

      The criteria are as follows:

      • Practice: practice, ethics and resource utilization
      • Professional Development: performance, education/career development
      • Collaboration: collaboration, collegiality
      • Scientific Inquiry: quality of care, research.

      Education/Experience Minimum Requirements:
      Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, no experience.
      Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of experience, or an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field and no experience; or a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) and no experience.
      Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of experience, or an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of experience; or a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of experience, or a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no experience.
      Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of experience, or ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 years experience or a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 years experience, or a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no experience.

      Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 years experience or Doctoral degree in nursing or related field and approximately 2-3 years experience.
