Duties

The incumbent practices as a registered nurse in the Gynecology (GYN) clinic in the Nursing Section of Patient Care Service within the Saginaw Veteran Affairs Medical Center (VAMC). The Registered Nurse (RN) is primarily accountable for assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating direct and indirect nursing care, and identifying outcomes for patients in the outpatient clinical setting. He/She is responsible for coordinating patient care delivery to ensure quality care according to established standards of care/practice, policy and procedure. The GYN Clinic provide integrated, accessible health care services to veterans addressing a large majority of the veterans personal health care needs, in partnership with the patient and practicing in the context of family/community. The GYN clinic services provide acute, chronic, preventive care and coordinate referrals. Patients range in age from young adult to geriatric. Common GYN conditions include abnormal pap smears, abnormal uterine bleeding, endometriosis, fibroids, incontinence, and gynecology ecologic cancers. The GYN RN demonstrates technical and operational knowledge and is able to apply these skills in the clinical setting. The nurse operates specialized therapeutic and life support equipment. As the GYN nurse is accountable for facilitating patient access and team productivity. The nurse triages patients, reviews consults and schedules patients in the clinic, coordinates surgical boarding schedule with the operating room, ensures that all appropriate surgical equipment, instruments, implants and supplies will be available for each surgical case, facilitates the schedule for diagnostic test. Collaborates with providers and ancillary services. Provides patient/family teaching as appropriate. Analyzes and upgrades patient care through quality improvement activities. Monitors activities occurring within the service. Strives to maintain clinical competencies through continuous study, in-services and participation in obtaining continuing education units. Based on education and experience, may be assigned responsibilities as preceptor. This position will support the Urology clinic in the absence of the Urology clinic coordinator and when census is low in the GYN Clinic.

  • Demonstrates competency in identifying and addressing ethical issues that impact clients and staff, including initiating and participating in ethics consultations.
  • Applies the nursing process to systems or processes at the unit/team/work group level to improve care. Demonstrates leadership by involving others in improving care.
  • Provides complete patient assessment, including vital signs and pre-examination procedures. Gathers and assesses objective and subjective data from the patient.
  • Accurately documents in the medical record patient findings, assessments, and care provided.
  • Demonstrates responsibility and accountability for own nursing judgments and actions.
  • Demonstrates leadership in identifying and addressing ethical issues that impact clients and staff, including initiating and participating in ethics consultations.
  • Provides leadership in the application of the nursing process to client care, organizational processes and/ or systems, improving outcomes at the program or service level.

    • Basic Requirements:
      • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
      • Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
      • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
      • Registered Nurses appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English.
      Preferred Experience: Must have 3 - 5 years of current GYN clinic experience

      Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
      • Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
      • Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience.
      • Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.
      • Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
      • Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree.
