Registered Nurse (Inpatient Surgery)

As an RN assigned to the 5 East (Inpatient Surgery), the nurse is primarily responsible for applying the nursing process to the care of veteran patients admitted to the 5 East section of the VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System. The RN is responsible and accountable for all elements of the nursing process when providing and/or supervising direct patient care. The RN assesses, plans, implements and evaluates care based on age-specific components. The RN assumes responsibility for the coordination of care focused on patient transition through the continuum of care, patient and family education, patient self-management after discharge, and supporting factors that impact customer satisfaction. The incumbent considers all characteristics of the individual, including age and life stages, state of health, race and culture, values, and previous experiences. The RN administers medications and procedures per established policies and guidelines. The RN influences care outcomes by collaborating with members of the interdisciplinary team. The core elements of performance include knowledge and active participation in unit/program level quality improvement processes and initiatives as well as customer service programs. In addition, the nurse delivers fundamental, knowledge-based care to adult and geriatric patients while developing technical competence in accordance with the Michigan Nurse Practice Act, Medical Center, and VAHQ standards of practice. The incumbent provides direct nursing care to individual and groups of patients under the guidance and direction of the Unit/Nurse Manager.

As a Staff Nurse you will provide prescribed medical treatment and personal care services to ill and injured veterans. Duties include documenting observations, assessments, and changes in patient's condition; collaborating with health team members to facilitate positive patient care outcomes; providing a full range of nursing care to patients with a variety of physical and/or behavior problems; and accountable for meeting and maintaining the qualification standards and functional statements of assigned grade. Our facility is seeking individuals who possess good organizational skills which enable completion of work, a demonstrated ability to assume leadership in a patient centered program, and the ability to establish effective communication with patients, families, visitors and members of the interdisciplinary team.

Preferred Experience. 2-3 years of Medical/Surgical experience preferred. BSN preferred.

Physical Requirements: This position requires Heavy Lifting, 45 pounds heavy carrying, 45 pounds straight pulling (4 hours); pushing (4 hours); use of fingers; both hands required; walking & standing 8-12 hours; repeated bending 8 hours; both legs required; ability for rapid mental & muscular coordination simultaneously; near vision correctable @ 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4; far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other; depth perception; ability to distinguish shades of colors; hearing (aide permitted). Transferring patients and objects may be required. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations or operative/invasive procedures. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on patient needs.

    • BASIC REQUIREMENTS:

      U.S. citizenship. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

      Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agencyAND accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.

      The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6)

      Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.

      Must be proficient in spoken and written English.

      Grade Determinations:
