Registered Nurse - Mental Health (Outpatient) - HCC Charlotte

RN is directly responsible to the designated Nurse Manager in the assigned area; the RN is responsible and accountable for the provision of direct patient care and for the delivery of quality nursing care to a culturally diverse Veteran patient population in the MH&BS setting. The RN possesses the knowledge and skills to effectively apply all aspects of the nursing process within a collaborative, interdisciplinary practice setting, which will enable effective implementation of recovery-oriented care as it pertains to management of mental health issues.

Duties include, but are not limited to the following:

Applies the nursing process to systems or processes at the unit/team/workgroup level to provide recovery-oriented care to outpatients or to patients on an Inpatient Unit
Functions as a Charge Nurse
Demonstrates professionalism during interactions with patients, peers and internal/external stakeholders
Develops and maintains therapeutic relationships with all patients
Maintains and monitors a safe environment for clients and staff
Collaborates with patient and treatment team to develop/update a patient-centered treatment plan and documents in Mental Health Suite in a timely manner
Responsible for maintaining PMDB training and utilizing principles of the Prevention and Management of Disruptive Behavior when necessary to maintain safety
Demonstrates knowledge of psychiatric disorders and psychotropic medications applies this knowledge to patient care and medication administration
Responsible for maintaining competency with behavioral health restraints and demonstrates ability to apply restraint/seclusion when necessary.
Participates in the Peer Review process.
Assist with education and competency validation for mental health staff as assigned
Has a comprehensive nursing knowledge and skills to care for the Veteran with post-traumatic stress disorder

Supports the clinic psychiatrist or mid-level provider regarding communication with Veteran
Demonstrates proficiency in the administration, as well as documentation, of long acting

medications as prescribed

Provides physician support for the physical assessment, planning and care of patients receiving services with outpatient mental health
Facilitates collection of urine drug screens for Veterans enrolled in outpatient programs.

Completes all admission assessment requirements, as assigned within mental health outpatient services, for Veterans admitted to the programs as well as any subsequent assessments required.

Coordinates care for Veterans receiving outpatient services when the need for a higher level of care (admission to other programs I services) is imminent.

Preferred Experience: 1-2 years Mental Health Experience

Work Schedule; Shift, weekend and holiday rotation is required. Weekend, evenings and holidays required. Management may change unit and shift assignments as needed to ensure care of our Veterans.

    • BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
      • U.S. citizenship. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
      • Full unrestricted Licensure, Certification, or Registration required
      • Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6)
      • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.

      Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

      Grade Determinations: Experience as a RN will be evaluated to determine if the experience is of an acceptable level of quality with regard to the following four dimensions of nursing: Practice, Professional Development, Collaboration and Scientific Inquiry. Each dimension of practice has criteria that demonstrate essential core competencies for VHA Nursing Personnel. The criteria are as follows:

      • Practice: practice, ethics and resource utilization;
      • Professional Development: performance, education/career development;
      • Collaboration; collaboration, collegiality;
      • Scientific Inquiry: quality of care, research.
