Registered Nurse (OR/Perioperative)

This position is located with the Memphis VA Medical Center in Memphis, TN. In this position you will serve as a Registered Nurse providing and supervising nursing care in the Operating Room Suite, and other areas as directed, utilizing the nursing process. Duties of this position include:
Serves as a circulating nurse or scrub nurse;
Sets up and maintains a sterile field and operating room adhering to Association of Operating Room Nurses (AORN) Standards;
Rotates to other patient care areas as assigned;
Adheres to established policies, standard of care, and standards of practice that demonstrate leadership within Nursing Service; and
Responds to patient needs and ensures customer satisfaction which reflects an understanding of age specific and developmental needs.
Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 6:45am - 3:15pm as well as on-call evenings/nights during the week and on weekends.

    • U.S. Citizenship- Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
      BASIC EDUCATION: Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). OR
      The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. OR
      In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active, and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. (Documentation required).(Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6)
      License/Registration: Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. English Language Proficiency- In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position.

      Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within the grade. (Copies of transcripts showing degree conferred are required):
      Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
      Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of experience, or an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field and no additional nursing practice/experience; or a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience.
      Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of experience, or an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of experience; or a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of experience; or a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no experience.
      Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of experience; or ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 years' experience; or a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 years of experience; or a Doctoral degree in nursing; or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no experience.
      Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 years' experience; or Doctoral degree in nursing or related field and approximately 2-3 years of experience.

      Preferred Experience (Please provide documentation to support your level of Education and Experience listed below):
      BA Degree in Nursing with two (2) years of experience in the Operating Room
      Specialty Certification as a Perioperative Nurse (CNOR)
      Must have current certification in BLS/CPR and ACLS
      NOTE: Applicant's education and length of nursing practice (experience) will be considered by a Nurse Professionals Board in determining the grade and step of the applicant selected.
      Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
