The VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System (VAGLAHS) is one of the largest, most complex health care systems within The Department of Veterans Affairs. It is one component of the VA Desert Healthcare network (VISN22) offering services to veterans residing in Southern California and Nevada. VAGLAHS Consists of three ambulatory care centers, a tertiary care facility and 10 community based outpatient clinics. VAGLAHS serves veterans residing throughout five counties. There are 1.4 million veterans in the VAGLAHS service area. VAGLAHS is a teaching hospital, providing a full range of patient care services, with state-of-the-art technology as well as education and research programs. VAGLAHS includes inpatient facilities at the West Los Angeles campus, two community living centers at the West VAGLAHS has the largest Community Care Program in the nation that supports homeless Veterans. VAGLAHS Community Care Homeless Program, which includes facilities and staff dedicated to the support of veterans who are homeless, is the largest in the nation. Duties

The VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System is seeking to find experienced Registered Nurses (RN) to work in our Primary and Ambulatory Care Department. He/she may function as a member of the Patient Aligned Care Teams (PACT) with emphasis on improving health outcomes through a system of care management and coordination. He/she ensures that Veteran-centered health care is provided and delivered in a quality, timely, accessible and respectful manner, consistent with the mission, goals and objectives of the Veteran's Health Administration. He/she is responsible to the assigned Clinic Nurse Manager. Duties of the position include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Coordinates care for ambulatory clinic patients. Assists the Care Provider in selected procedures and performs diagnostic testing, i.e. EKG, phlebotomy, wound care to patients and provides direct care to patients in emergencies
  • Functions as a leader of the nursing care team when assigned, directing and guiding the LVNs and other nursing staff
  • Assesses patient's needs and conditions and recommends appropriate dispositions based on assessment
  • Initiates appropriate nursing interventions and communication with other team members
  • Provides patient education on an individual or group basis
  • Participates actively in the Performance Improvement activities of Ambulatory Care, and in development of policies and procedures
  • Assures detailed, current and comprehensive documentation is contained in the patient medical record and other pertinent records
  • Participates and supports research projects directed toward improving patient care and staff development
  • Provides a safe and healthful physical environment for patients and personnel by interpreting and applying organizational goals and national standards
  • Assures continuing improvement of service to patients, including implementation of an effective customer service program
  • Ensures compliance with all patient rights and regulatory agency standards
  • Collaborates with the other health care professionals in providing continuity of services for specific health issues
  • Improves continuity of professional relationships among the health care team as they collaborate on behalf of patients.

    • Basic Requirements:
      • English Language Proficiency. In accordance with 38 U.S.C7402(d), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English.
      • Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
      • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
      Preferred Experience:
      • BSN preferred
      • At least 3 years of recent, successful Registered Nurse experience
      • At least 1 (one) year of experience in a Primary and Ambulatory Care Setting
      • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from one of the following: American Heart Association - Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers OR the Military Training Network (MTN) Provider Certificate/Card
      • One year of full-time, successful recent RN practice in an RN role
      • Evidence of self-direction or organizational skills
      • Evidence of effectively educating patients and patient families
      Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
      • Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
      • Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience.
      • Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.
      • Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
      • Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree.
