The VA Palo Alto Health Care System (VAPAHCS) consists of three inpatient facilities located at Palo Alto, Menlo Park, and Livermore, plus seven outpatient clinics in San Jose, Fremont, Capitola, Monterey, Stockton, Modesto, and Sonora. These facilities provide some of the world's finest medical care and cutting-edge technology.

VAPAHCS is a teaching hospital with an affiliation with the Stanford University School of Medicine which provides a rich academic environment including medical training for physicians in virtually all specialties and subspecialties. Our Health Care System operates over 800 beds, including three nursing homes and a 100-bed homeless domiciliary - all to serve more than 67,000 enrolled Veterans.

Duties

Work Schedule: Full-time; 6:00pm to 2:30am with the ability to rotate to nights and days to meet the programs.

The Assistant Nurse Manager for Community Living Center - is a self-directed nurse leader who is accountable to Nursing Manager for the assigned location. As a part of the Nursing leadership team he/she ensures administrative support and guidance while providing oversight for the delivery of resident centered nursing care and management of nursing personnel and clinical resources. Works collaboratively with the Interdisciplinary teams. Assists with the coordination and accountability for all regulatory and environmental surveys and adheres to mandatory response timelines Demonstrates, promotes, creates and ensures a culturally diverse workforce in which the values and needs of all individuals are respected. Provides an environment that fosters employees to perform to their full
individual potential. Promotes a culture of staff empowerment and transformational leadership. The Assistant Nurse Manager executes position responsibilities that demonstrate leadership, experience, and creative approaches to management of complex resident care. In addition, applies skills necessary to identify, coordinate, and/or identify discipline-specific education, as well as training in leadership, professional staff development and emerging needs, to all levels of staff. This Registered Nurse (RN) is a nurse supervisor and provides oversight for the administration of leave, counseling and disciplinary actions in collaboration with the Nurse Manager. Acts as the Nurse Manager during times of Nurse Manager absences.

The major duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Facilitates the development and implementation of nursing standards for the management of specificresidentpopulationinalongtermcaresetting.Consultswithdiscipline specific experts for the interpretation and application of other professional standards.
  • Conducts effective staff conferences: accepts responsibility for meetings/conferences/neighborhood activities,maintains direction and follow-up with decided plan to improve resident care.
  • Assists Nurse Manager to monitor, develop, and implement action plans to improve unit's budget performance. Assumes delegated responsibility for the review and approval of unplanned leave.
  • Collaborates with peers, physicians, and other health care providers in management and coordination of health care needs of the patient.
  • Coordinates management, teaching, consultation, and support to individuals and their families regarding medication, therapeutic nutrition, environment, psychosocial economics, adoptive and rehabilitative needs and/or problems.

    • BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
      • United States Citizenship.
      • Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency, and accredited by the National League of Nursing Accreditation Commission (NLNAC) which changed to the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) at the time the program was completed; OR the completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005/27, Appendix G6). OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
      • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration (i.e., licensure) as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the U.S. or the District of Columbia. Note: Provide your RN registered license number on your application.

      Grade Determinations: In addition to the basic requirements, the following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:

      • Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
      • Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience.
      • Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.
      • Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
      • Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience.

      Preferred Criteria:
      • One (1) year of full-time experience as a licensed professional Registered Nurse
      • Current BLS provider card from the American Heart Association or the Military Training Network (MTN)
      • Minimum of three years of RN Experience in Geriatrics or Long Term Care Setting
      • Possess a national certification in Gerontology (RN-BC) or Wound Care (WCC)
      • Minimum of one year of progressive leadership responsibilities to include preceptor, mentor, and charge nurse duties
