VA North Texas Health Care System (VANTHCS) is the second busiest VA system in the nation and we are growing! Comprised of the Dallas VA Medical Center, Sam Rayburn Memorial Veterans Center in Bonham, Fort Worth Outpatient Clinic and Tyler VA Primary Care Clinic, VANTHCS is an integrated health care system with more than4,500 employees and over 1,600 volunteers and clinical trainees. VANTHCS also coordinates a Community Based Outpatient Clinic program throughout its 40-county primary service area to improve access to care for veterans throughout 38 North Texas and 2 in southern Oklahoma. Through these four distinctive facilities and relationships with other agencies, VANTHCS offers a continuum of health care services to a veteran population of approximately 500,000.

Bonham is a small, historical town that is located in the center of Texomaland. Just south of the Texas/Oklahoma border, Bonham is only 25 miles away from the conveniences of entertainment offered by the larger cities of Sherman, Denison and Paris. Also, being only an hour away, the Dallas/Ft. Worth metroplex offers a unique blend of Southwestern warmth, cosmopolitan flair, old west charm and modern sophistication.

Duties

Work Schedule: Various shifts with rotating weekends and holidays

Applications are being accepted for a RN position in Nursing Service in the Bonham Domiciliary, in Bonham, Texas. This is a 224 bed Domiciliary Residential Rehabilitation Treatment Program (DRRTP). The DRRTP is an intensive 224-bed biopsychosocial rehabilitation program for veterans with potential for rehabilitation and medical management. Veterans served typically have multiple areas of need (medical, post-surgical, psychiatric, and substance abuse). Emphasis of the program is on the acquisition of skills, knowledge, attitudes, and habits that will foster successful community re-entry and management of chronic medical problems.

The position requires previous clinical experience, knowledge and skill in preventive health care and experience in coordinating complex care. Minimum of two years of recent nursing experience in medical setting and a BSN preferred. Ability to implement the self-medication program in the Domiciliary including ability to assess patient's comprehension of medication regimen, extensive assessment of the patient's eligibility to qualify for the self-medication program including extensive monitoring and documentation of patient's knowledge and compliance with medications. Applicant should possess effective oral and written communication skills. Ability to tactfully deal with patients, families, and interdisciplinary team members. Ability to perform medical record reviews, collate and report review findings and monitor day-to-day operations/processes within the clinic setting. Ability to perform abbreviated patient history and physical assessments, as wells as, data collection skills. Must be able to work in a self-directed manner. Collaborating and coordinating with health care professionals outside nursing service. Ability to interact with multi-disciplinary groups as evidenced by active participation in Nursing Service unit level work-teams, special task forces and/or service level programs. Ability to provide educational instruction to patients, families, and staff. Knowledge of and functional in CPRS, as well as proficiency in keyboarding and basic operations.

Must have the physical capabilities to initiate crisis intervention measures, transfer/transport patients and the ability and willingness to accomplish satisfactory training and performance in nursing care emergencies.Willingness to cross train for working in all clinics is required and flexibility in assignment scheduling that may include working Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays and will require working flexible tours of duty.

    • Basic Requirements:
      • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
      • Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
      • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
      Grade Determinations:

      The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
      • Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
      • Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience.
      • Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.
      • Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
      • Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience.

      Preferred Experience:
