Duties

As the Registered Nurse, Chief, Sterile Processing Service (SPS) you will:

  • Actively participates in policies, procedures and standards to promote evidence-based patient-driven care.
  • Establish guidelines for performance expectations for staff, which are clearly communicated through the formal employee supervisory performance management systems.
  • Identifies and maintains SPS standards for the practice of all services and contributes to the fulfillment of the mission of the clinical areas.
  • Participates in assessing the decontamination, high level disinfection & sterilization process, and pre-cleaning processes utilized throughout the system including the clinics and ambulatory surgery center.
  • Assesses the environment, analyzes trends, transmits data, communicates ideas, develops and implements policies, initiates programs and systems and collaborates in the management of resources.
  • Demonstrates expertise and comprehensive understanding of the decontamination/sterilization process.
  • Plays a leadership role in ongoing systematic evaluation and improvement of quality and effectiveness of SPD processes and practices.
  • Collaborates directly with Infection Control, Nurse Manager of the Ambulatory Surgery Center and Specialty Clinics, and other clinic Nurse Managers.
  • Assesses, monitors, develops and assists with implementing corrective action plans for instrument and reusable medical equipment processing, decontamination, sterilization, biological monitoring, and high level disinfecting monitoring.
  • Coordinate recall activities as directed.
  • Actively participants in Environmental Rounds and Operating Room and SPS quality improvement activities.
  • Subject matter expert in sterile processing and equipment/instrument high level disinfection.
  • Addresses the clinic/facility's program (sterilization, decontamination, instrument processing) and the developmental needs of staff members.
  • Recommends new or revised practices or procedures based on currently accepted, evidence-based infection prevention and control and supply processing and decontamination strategies and policies.
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of the sterilization, processing and decontamination monitoring tools that have been implemented to ensure high quality service.
  • Identifies needs for improvement by monitoring and evaluating patient care programs through periodic observed/demonstrated handling and processing of complex equipment utilized for endoscopic procedures.
  • Monitors medical equipment reprocessing activities performed outside the sterile processing area, e.g. high level disinfection of equipment in GI area, Radiology, etc.
  • Maintains records and files to include instrument tray count sheets; prepares standard operating procedures.
  • Evaluates practice of self and others against standards of practice and relevant regulations (i.e. SPS Handbook 7176, JC, AORN, SGNA, OSHA, FDA, AAMI) and takes action to improve compliance.
  • Completes proficiencies, performance appraisals and competencies for appropriate staff in compliance with hospital policies and procedures.
  • Initiates appropriate corrective action for performance problems and recognized quality performance.
  • Ensures all functions of Sterile Processing employees involved in RME processes have clearly defined performance standards that are identified as critical elements in performance appraisals
  • Ensures all functions of Sterile Processing, regardless of organizational alignment, are functioning effectively. This includes: decontamination, preparation, sterilization and high level disinfection.
  • Assures staff compliance with established standards in SPS decontamination and preparation processes. high level disinfection.
  • Maintains pertinent records and reports (bacteriological test results, sterilization tests, preventive maintenance, etc.)
  • Collaborates in the integration of pertinent regulatory requirements, accreditation standards, guidelines and current infection control and sterilization and decontamination and processing practices into policies and procedures.
  • Ensures that findings, recommendations and policies of SPS are disseminated to appropriate individuals
  • Maintains access to current information on infection prevention and control, sterilization and decontamination principles.Communicates knowledge and understanding of Joint Commission and VHA Standards by correct interpretation to those who need to know.
  • Assists in the organization's preparation for the Joint Commission surveys and other governmental surveys by conducting rounds, providing employees with educational sessions as needed, and by preparing and presenting the details of the SPD programs during the survey.
  • Collaborates with the Infection Control Nurse to evaluate, collaborate and promote compliance with established SPD and infection control policy/procedures.

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

    • Basic Requirements:
      • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
      • Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
