The VA Salt Lake City Health Care System (VASLCHCS) is made up of compassionate employees committed to caring for Veterans whose sacrifices know no limit. We are part of the Rocky Mountain Veterans Integrated Service Network (VISN 19). Our health care system consists of the George E. Whalen Utah, Idaho, and Nevada. We provide health care to over 50,000 eligible Veterans across one of the largest geographical areas in VA. We are a teaching hospital, providing full range of patient care services, holistic medicine as well as education and research in partnership with the University of Utah and other institutions of higher education. Comprehensive health care is provided through our primary care providers and tertiary care is offered in areas of medicine, surgery, psychiatry, physical medicine and rehabilitation, neurology, oncology, dentistry, and geriatrics.

Duties

The Nurse Manager Primary Care is a registered professional nurse who is accountable for the management of patient care in an outpatient clinic setting. Primary Care in the SLC VAHCS is delivered using the PACT Model of care.
The Nurse Manager is responsible for the management of resources; staff development/education, quality improvement, interdisciplinary problem solving, staff retention, development and implementation of policies, and guides, counsels and supervises staff.

The Nurse Manager also supports professional growth through facilitating educational activities, encouraging staff attendance and participation on unit or hospital committees, quality improvement projects, or membership in professional organizations. Duties include but not limited to:

  • Clinical documentation as outlined in the staff nurse job description
  • Staff Evaluations/Interviewing/Hiring documents
  • Staff schedule
  • Quality Improvement activities
  • Reports as indicated for specific clinics
  • Timecards/leave requests
  • Documents as required by regulatory bodies
  • Staff education records
  • Policies/Procedures/Standards of care as required for specific clinics
  • Twenty-four hour accountability for quality of care provided in assigned area.
  • Able to provide patient care as outlined by the staff nurse job description in the clinic assigned as nurse manager.
  • Is proactive in identifying potential crisis situations and responds effectively in emergency/code situations.
  • Functions as a consult person to physicians, nursing and other personnel for complex patient care issues.
  • Monitors staffing needs and maintains adequate levels to provide safe patient care in coordination with the ACNS and Human Resources.
  • Maintains a safe work environment by routinely inspecting the area and requesting engineering/housekeeping assistance as needed.
  • Provides timely follow-up on all patient complaints/concerns.
  • Communicates and/or mediates effectively with staff and support personnel to solve patient care and staff issues.
  • As applicable, monitors use of controlled substances and completes reports as needed.
  • Requests supplies and equipment as needed.
  • Evaluates provision of care in assigned clinic areas.
  • Functions in a leadership role along with the Chief of Primary Care, to provide a consistent, engaged leadership Team for PACT and Primary Care staff.
This Supervisory position is responsible for multiple disciplines within the clinic.

Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM

      Basic Requirements
      :
      • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
      • Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
      • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
      Preferred Experience: Master's degree specializing in Management or Business AND Two (2) years of demonstrated experience in Healthcare management/Supervisory experience AND Five (5) years of prior RN clinical experience.

      Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
      • Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
      • Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience.
      • Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.
      • Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
      • Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree.
