The Clinical Nurse Education Specialist (CNES) embodies characteristics of high level performance related to both Professional Development and Clinical Nursing Education.The (CNES) IV practices within the Pennsylvania Hospital professional practice model and exhibits UPHS core values, which reflect its mission. Based on a specialized knowledge base, the CNES participates in the assessment, design, implementation and evaluation of practice standards that improve the delivery of high quality, comprehensive, individualized patient-family care. The CNES is a clinical leadership position that includes the traditional components of patient care, consultation, research utilization and education with the dual aims of upholding practice standards and contributing to the professional development of others. An important focus of the CNES role is to understand the organizational goals and work with clinical staff to implement practice initiatives/changes.As a clinical leader, the CNES serves as a vital liaison to communicate and negotiate multiple perspectives within the organization in a respectful and effective manner to achieve/advocate positive change and delivery of appropriate and ethical care in specific situations. The CNES role includes:  Development, implementation and evaluation of educational programming to meet the learning needs and promote the professional development of nurses and clinical staff; Serve as leader and collaborator on interprofessional teams to:o incorporate research and evidence-based practice into policies, practices, and patient care; o refine and improve workflows;o develop efficient work systems; o and improve the quality of care and patient outcomes Oversee orientation programs from the unit to health system level for new-to-practice/specialty and experienced RNs and associate nurse roles; Demonstrate a spirit of generosity and flexibility to meet patient, family and staff needs; Convey a clinical presence that supports the team in the delivery of care, and;  Creates an environment that facilitates and preserves the autonomy and accountability of the primary and associate nurse rolesCNESs are self-directed and purposeful in maintaining current professional knowledge and competence within a specialty area. The domains of clinical judgment and decision-making, nurse-patient/family relationship, clinical leadership and clinical scholarship frame the work of the CNES. The implementation of any CNES position varies and evolves over time in response to patient population needs, new clinical evidence, organizational goals and changes within the health system locally and nationally. As such, the CNES and the appropriate clinical leadership partners collaborate and determine role implementation activities and mutually establish clinically relevant accountabilities.

- Graduate of an NLN approved school of professional nursing. Licensed to practice professional nursing in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania\n- Completion of a Master’s degree in Nursing (MSN)\n- Critical care experience required; prior role in clinical education strongly preferred \n- Professional Certification in specialty area preferred (required within one year of hire)\n- Previous experience with and knowledge of computerized technology or programs\n- Strong interpersonal, communication, and analytical skills
