Duties

The following duties of the APRN-GI include, but are not limited to:

  • Performs initial histories and physical examinations
  • Provides ongoing outpatient care for the assigned patients as well as episodic patients.
  • Screens outpatient to determined future.
  • Prescribes medications within defined scope of practice(including Schedule II-V Controlled Substances)Writing orders and prescription as necessary for the care of the patient in accordance with Federal and State laws.
  • Appropriately identified vested patients and ensures accurate data entered into medical system
  • Ordering diagnostic studies such as laboratory tests and x-rays
  • Carrys out health promotion and disease prevention activities
  • Orders, consults notes, procedures notes, progress notes, consultation requests and administrative letters which are written by the APRN will be clearly identified as such in the written and electronic medical records.
  • Initiating and expediting request for consultation and scheduling of special tests and studies
  • Making interim summaries on progress notes of the patients medical record
  • Providing education and counseling to patient and families for preventive care, medical conditions and use of prescribed treatment and drugs
  • Administrative of topical anesthesia
  • Performs various procedures related to Gastroenterology as approved in his/her scope of practice
  • Participates in Quality Assurance activities including Root Cause Analysis and Failure Mode Effect Analysis, Tort claim reviews.
  • Participates in Staff meetings, Specialty Care team meetings and mandatory staff functions events
  • Completed all mandatory training modules timely
  • Completes required numbers of total credit hours and patient safety hours annually
  • Must maintain active certification by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) and the Commission on the Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).
  • Must maintain active Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
  • Adheres to facility current policies and procedures and Medical Staff By-Laws
  • Uses word processing software to execute several office automation functions such as storing and retrieving electronic documents and files; activating printers; inserting and deleting text, formatting letters reports, and memoranda; transmitting and receiving e-mails
  • Use the Veterans Health Informational and Technology Architecture (VistA) to access information in the Medical Center computer system
  • Appropriate use of equipment and supplies
  • Maintain and orderly and safe area
  • Report any accident to self and/or patient . Ensure to complete appropriate incident report form
  • Other duties assigned as appropriate to the position

    • Basic Requirements:
      • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
      • Graduate of a school of professional nursing with a Master's Degree approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
      • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
      • Full and current certification as a nurse practitioner from the American Nurses Association or another nationally recognized certifying body in a specialty to which the individual is being appointed or selected
      Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
      • Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
      • Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience.
      • Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.
      • Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
      • Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree.
