Summary
Duties

The Associate Director for Patient Care Services (ADPCS) is a member of the Chillicothe VAMC Executive Leadership Team, along with the Medical Center Director, the Associate Medical Center Director, and the Chief of Staff. The ADPCS participates fully in upper-level management decisions to speak on behalf of nursing and other hospital administration issues and is a member of the Medical Center-level Councils and Committees that govern and influence the operations of the Medical Center. He/She is fully involved in the strategic planning with the VISN 10 Network Director and nationally.

The ADPCS is the Nurse Executive for this facility and its associated Community Based Outpatient Clinics. He/She is responsible for the practice of nursing 24/7 by all registered nurses, advanced practice nurses, and allied health staff (LPNs, NA, etc) regardless of line authority. He/She has line authority over Sterile Processing Services and Transition Care Management. The ADPCS will exercise final authority and approval over nursing job descriptions, nursing care policies and procedures; nursing standards of patient care, treatment, and services, standards of nursing practice, nurse staffing plans; and standards to measure, assess, and improve patient outcomes. He/She will ensure that all registered nurses, advance practice nurses, and licensed practical nurses are licensed, certified, and/or registered upon employment and thereafter.

The ADPCS will demonstrate advanced knowledge/experience in the development, coordination, implementation, and evaluation of an organization wide plan to provide nursing care, treatment, and services. The ADPCS coordinates and directs the development/implementation of an effective, on-going program to measure, analyze, and improve the quality of care throughout the organization. The ADPCS reports to the Medical Center Director.

Work Schedule: Monday through Friday - 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. with some evening, weekends, and holidays possible

    • Basic Requirements:
      • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
      • Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
      • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.


      Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
      • Nurse V - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN (or a Bachelor's degree in a related field) and approximately 5-6 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree (preferred) in nursing or related field and appropriate basic or advanced certification desired, and approximately 4-5 years of nursing practice/experience.
      Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-6 Nurse Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.

      Physical Requirements: This position requires potentially extended periods of continued walking, standing, and sitting. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, and able to shift priorities based on patient needs. The incumbent will be required to complete annual Employee Health requirements, such as annual TB screening or testing, as a condition of employment.
