Certified Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS)

Position description

Identifies high risk patient groups and lead development of evidence based plans for meeting individual, family, community, and population needs to improve safety, service, and outcomes. Conducts a comprehensive advanced patient assessment for clinical diagnostic reasoning (e.g., putting whole picture together). Conducts comprehensive, holistic wellness and illness assessments using known or innovative evidence-based techniques, tools and direct and indirect methods. Evaluates the effectiveness of the plan of care and patient outcomes at an advanced practice level. Facilitates transitions across the continuum of care to minimize fragmentation of care. Participates in multidisciplinary patient rounds/conferences at an advanced practice level to enhance collaboration and accomplish identified goals/outcomes. Identifies/monitors nurse sensitive patient outcomes and recommend evidence based interventions to improve these outcomes. Determines when evidence based guidelines, policies, procedures and plans of care need to be tailored to the individual. Differentiates between outcomes that required care process modification at the individual patient level and those that require modification at the system level. Identifies, articulates, and take actions on ethical concerns at the patient, family, and health care provider. Prescribes pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic interventions, diagnostic measures, equipment, procedures, and treatments to meet the needs of patients, families and groups, in accordance with professional preparation, institutional privileges, state and federal laws, and practice acts. Advance nursing practice through innovative evidence based interventions, best practice guidelines and modification of professional standards and organizational policies that direct the care of nursing personnel and other providers of healthcare to improve outcomes through collaborative practice. Identifies measurable variables in clinical nursing practice outcomes. Analyzes and interprets data regarding clinical nursing practice. Identifies needed changes in nursing practice and utilizes change strategies to facilitate those changes. Provides consultation to staff nurses, medical staff and interdisciplinary colleagues. Mentors staff nurses, graduate students, and new CNS hires to acquire new knowledge and skills and develop their careers. Mentors health professionals in applying the principles of evidence based care. Uses coaching and advanced communication skills to facilitate the development of effective clinical teams. Provides leadership in conflict management and negotiation to address problems in the healthcare system. Fosters professional accountability in self or others. Participates in scholarly activity related to clinical nursing practice (e.g., publishing, presenting, research activities, translation of evidence into practice). Able to manage change and empower others to influence clinical practice and political processes both within and across systems. Participates in/leads departmental and institutional groups requiring advanced practice and/or clinical expertise (e.g., committees, consultation teams) to improve outcomes through evidence- based practice. Develops and evaluates clinical solutions for application across areas/populations. Evaluates programs of care for appropriateness of implementation across the continuum. Analyzes research findings and other evidence for their potential application to clinical practice. Participates and identifies quality improvement initiatives for unit, department, enterprise, or population. Contributes to collective CNS practice within the organization. Participates in/lead the development and revision of evidence-based guidelines/policies/order sets/protocols. Leads system change to improve outcomes through evidence based practice.


Experience: Five years of successful work experience in nursing with two years in the specialty area preferred. Experience as a CNS preferred.

Education: Masters Degree with a major in nursing with a Clinical Nurse Specialist focus. Doctorate of Nursing Practice degree preferred.

Additional qualifications

Special Skills: Flexibility to adjust schedule to meet patient needs and CNS workload.

License or certification

Licensure & Certification: Current RN license by applicable state requirements. Current APRN license by applicable state requirements. If state doesn't have APRN licensure, Clinical Nurse Specialist Certification, in designated specialty by a nationally recognized body deemed acceptable by the State Board of Nursing in the state the CNS practices or a documented waiver deemed acceptable by the Board of Nursing in the state the CNS practices, when there is no Clinical Nurse Specialist Certification examination for the specialty. Maintains current Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers from one of the following programs: American Heart Association (BLS for Health Care Providers) or Red Cross (CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and Health Care Providers) Additional specialty certification/Training: as required by the work area.

Compensation Detail

Education, experience and tenure may be considered along with internal equity when job offers are extended.  The minimum salary every 2 weeks is approx $3189.60, based on a full-time position.
