Under supervision of the Director of Quality, coordinates surveillance and Infection Prevention activities that reduce the risk of endemic and epidemic nosocomial infections in patients, visitors and health care workers.  Coordinates and develops training and education programs for staff and other hospital professionals using cost effective and epidemiological sound surveillance, prevention and control methods. Participates in professional and community organizations, which impact the control of transmission of infections in Austin and surrounding communities. Participates in total quality management activities that support the organization.
All job functions, duties and responsibilities are carried out under the supervision of the Manager of Infection Prevention. Works to set priorities and makes decisions of a complex nature regarding infection prevention practices. Often interfaces directly with public, physicians, staff patients, and administration and ancillary/support department representatives.  Maintains confidentiality of patient’s medical records.  Regular and predictable attendance is required.  May be exposed to patients of all ages throughout the life span.
Job Function/Duties/Responsibilities
General Duties
  • Conducts surveillance, epidemiological studies and investigations under the supervision of the Manager of Infection Prevention
  • Conducts surveillance through systematic case finding and data collection
  • Enters data into computer
  • Assists in interpretation of data
Utilizes data to assist in the planning of interventions specific to the individual needs of the unit being served.
  • Develops a plan of action
  • Plans are specific to the needs of the individual department, as coordinated with the individual department directors

Collaborates system-wide with all disciplines and departments.

  • Assists with the review of departmental infection control policies
  • Assists in the development of new policies in conjunction with hospital leaders
  • Assists with the implementation of new policies
Participates in the Infection Prevention Committee and in quality initiatives of the health care system.
  • Assists with the preparation of agenda
  • Assists with the preparation of meeting packets
  • In the absence of the Manager of Infection Prevention, conducts meetings in conjunction with the Infection Prevention Committee Chairperson
  • Follows through on identified issues
  • Assists with the identification of QA indicators and prepares status reports for the Infection Prevention, Quality and Patient Safety committees
  • Participates in Infection Prevention and Quality issues as identified throughout the system
Serves as consultant, teacher and resource person in infection prevention and control issues
  • May participate on selected committees, which are impacted by infection control
  • Serves as consultant to St. David’s staff/departments to practitioners at the local and state level, and to state government and regulatory agencies
  • Ability to present educational programs on a regular basis and as needed
  • Participates in local infection control organizations and/or special task forces


Required: Associate's Degree in Nursing.
Preferred: Bachelor's Degree in Nursing.
Required: Minimum of 3 years experience in Infection Prevention and Control including use of analytical, computer, teaching, and research skills. Must have at least 5 years of hospital based clinical experience.
Preferred: Prefer experience in Infection Prevention and Control including use of analytical, computer, teaching and research skills.
Required:  Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in Texas. Certification in Infection Control required within 2 years of hire.
Preferred: Certification by the Board of Infection Control (CBIC)
