POSITION SUMMARY: The RN Resident is aregistered nurse participating in a specified training program which isstandardized based on area of specialization. The training includes orientation, combined with unit based, preceptedclinical experiences and didactic instruction.  The RN Resident is under the direct supervision of their Preceptor and NurseManager/Director.  According to surgerycenter policies and procedures, by the direction of their Preceptor, theImmersion Resident assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates nursing care forassigned patients.



·            ·     Progresstowards successful completion of training plan and demonstrates expectedcompetencies.

o  Completes mandatory education andcompetency requirements in specified timeframe.

o  Completes Life Safety OrientationCompetencies (LSOC) as well as facility/unit specific competency checklist, agespecific competency requirements.

o  Completes HIPAA/HITECH training andEthics and Compliance training, maintains confidentiality practices.

o  Meets regularly (at least weekly)with Preceptor, Educator, Manager/Director to track progress utilizing theOrientation Pathways Evaluation Level Tool.

·            ·     Plans comprehensive nursing carefor assigned patients according to written surgery center standards andphysician orders.

o  Recognizesthat variables such as age, race, nationality, culture, disease-causingvulnerabilities, socioeconomic facts affect the patient populations under theircase. Uses interventions appropriate to these factors (e.g., interpreter)

o    Identifies and prioritizes relevant nursingdiagnoses and critical pathways as appropriate.

o   Completes admission assessment and documentsaccurately. Completes and documents an admission assessment within appropriatetimeframe.                             

o  Performsand documents patient assessments and reassessments completely and accuratelyaccording to center policy or more frequently, as indicated by patientcondition.

o  Identifieschanges in patient condition (i.e. test results, abnormal findings, etc.) andreports these changes to the physician.

o  Initiatesdischarge planning upon admission.

o  Collaborateswith the interdisciplinary care team.Assesses and documents patient and familyeducational needs on admission through discharge.

·            ·     Providesand documents care to assigned patients in compliance with written surgerycenter policies and procedures and based on standards of care. 

o  Performs and documents nursing careaccording to patient needs in a competent and timely manner.

o  Initiates chain of command, asnecessary, to appropriately care for patients.

o  Accurately administers and documentsmedication per policy and procedure.

·      Evaluatespatient care outcomes in an appropriate and timely manner.

o   Evaluates plan of care to determine need formodifications in a timely and prompt manner according to established P&Ps,orders sets, and protocols.  Documentsappropriately.

o  Evaluates effectiveness of patientteaching and revises teaching plan as indicated.




  • Graduate from an accredited school of professional nursing.



  • Active RN license as required by state of employment or appropriate compact licensure
  • Valid BCLS Certification upon employment. ***online certification not acceptable.
  • ACLS as required by facility.
  • CNOR certification preferred.
