Summary
Duties

Note:
Assignment to other areas of the service line, medical center, or other CBOC's may be required. The Registered Nurse reports to the Nurse Manager and works in collaboration with his/her assigned CORE team, however, assignments may be made to other areas for purposes of cross coverage.

  • Supports the medical center's mission and core values.
  • Provides excellent customer service to all internal and external customers consistent with ICARE values.
  • Provide emergency and urgent care to patients with acute symptoms requiring immediate and/or prompt intervention.
  • Provide care to critically ill medical patients, may of who have multi-system failure requiring the staff nurse to be proficient in emergency measures, ECG interpretation, titration of multiple critical infusions, ventilator management, invasive procedures, conscious sedation, management of alcohol withdraw and psychiatric emergencies, etc.
  • Responsible and accountable for all elements of the nursing process when providing and/or supervising direct patient care.
  • Administers medications and procedures per established policy guidelines.
  • Provides efficient care triaging patients according to Emergency Severity Index and established protocols.
  • Considers all characteristics of the individual, including sex and role identification, age and life stage, state of health, race and culture, socio-economic status, values and previous experience with similar events, in order to assist each patient to identify and meet basic health needs and improve his/her health status to the individual's maximum potential.
  • Participates in unit/program level quality improvement processes and initiatives, as well as, the customer service program.
  • Demonstrates and maintains full competency in the use, pre-cleaning and/or reprocessing of reusable medical equipment.
The procedures outlined in AFGE Master Agreement, Article 23, Section 8 will be followed. First consideration will be given to current Sioux Falls VAHCS employees.

    • Basic Requirements:
      • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
      • Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. t
        • The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6).
      • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
      Preferred Experience: Emergency Department or Critical experience preferred. Certified Emergency Nurse, Certified Flight Registered Nurse or Critical Care RN certification preferred.

      Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
      • Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
      • Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience.
      • Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.
      • Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
      • Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree.
      Reference: VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-6 Nurse Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.

      Physical Requirements: The population of male and female Veterans served ranges from the adult, age 18, to the elderly adult; age 65 and over. Sioux Falls VAHCS is an interdisciplinary teaching facility, offering medical, surgical, and mental health inpatient services. Comprehensive health care is provided through primary care, tertiary care, and long-term care in the areas of medicine, surgery, psychiatry, physical medicine and rehabilitation, neurology, oncology, geriatrics, and transitional care. This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing. Transferring Veterans and objects may be required. The RN may be exposed to infected Veterans and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations or operative/invasive procedures. The RN may occasionally be exposed to Veterans who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. The RN must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on Veteran needs.
