POSITION SUMMARY – RN Special Procedures

The Registered Nurse demonstrates critical thinking skills,scientific judgment, and leadership in planning for the care of the patient. Thenurse in the Imaging Services Department has a dynamic and varied role. Theprimary goal of the Imaging Services RN is to provide high quality nursing careto the patient within Imaging Services. Skills utilized in their jobperformance includes; assessment, communication, teaching, leadership, andquality improvement to patients according to hospital standards, recognizednursing techniques, and both clinical and administrative policies. The overallgoal of the Imaging Services RN is to provide optimum patient care utilizingnursing process. The nurse will assess, identify needs, plan, implementappropriate interventions, document, and evaluate outcome.



The overall goal of the Imaging Services RN is to provideoptimum patient care utilizing nursing process. The nurse will assess, identifyneeds, plan, implement appropriate interventions, document, and evaluateoutcome.

  1. Clinical Duties:
    1. Be competent to care for all typesof patients with a high degree of knowledge and skill.

    2. Identify patient health relatedproblems and risk status and develop nursing care plan accordingly. Assistother Radiology staff in assessment, diagnosis, care planning, and evaluationof outcomes.

    3. Give individualized care, evaluateeffectiveness of nursing care, recognize significant changes in patientconditions.

    4. Obtain and record patient’s healthhistory, examine patient, perform comprehensive assessment in the outpatientand/or inpatient setting.  Determine theneed for and initiate diagnostic/screening test and evaluate and reportresults.  Evaluate and document patient’sprogress during follow-up or post-procedure assessments.  Participates in discharge planning includingarranging referrals, prescriptions, and patient education.

    5. Collaborate in the development,implementation, and evaluation of protocols and standards of practice.

    6. Consult with nursing and medicalpersonnel in the development and utilization of documentation and qualityimprovement tools and protocols related to interventional radiology care.

    7. Management of the IR clinicincluding patient scheduling, patient examination and evaluation, patientliaison through telephone calls, letters, etc.

    8. Market the Interventional Radiologyservice to internal and external constituencies through networking, rolemodeling, public awareness, and educational activities.

    9. Assist with IV preparation ofpatients and assure rapid transition in to the exam room.



  2. Provideassessment and care of the patient undergoing radiology procedures included butnot limited to PICC lines, thoracentesis, kyphoplasty and other imagingprocedures under moderate sedation.

  3. Providepre and post procedure education

  4. Appropriatelyrecognize and respond to emergencies during procedure

  5. Demonstratesunderstanding of knowledge required to assist radiologist during procedure

  6. Providesafe medication administration for the patient before, during and afterprocedure

  7. Utilizesappropriate hand off of care amongst healthcare givers

  8. Adheresto department standards for documenting patient care

  9. Provideeducation and discharge planning to patient/family.


  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) Degree preferred
  • Tuition Reimbursement Program (up to $5,250/calendar year)

  • 1-3 years of RN experience in asimilar role.

Licensure and Certifications:
  • Registered Nurse (RN) License in NH or valid Compact State License
  • BLS and ACLS (American Heart Association Health Care Provider)
  • HCA will pay for certification renewals once employed
