Summary
Duties

Responsibilities of this position includes; but are not limited to:

  • Serves as Quality Management Coordinator for SPS for VA Connecticut;
  • Develops ,implements, integrates and maintains a performance program to evaluate and improve the quality of the RME program;
  • Promotes quality in clinical practice by collaborating in the development of guidelines, criteria, and models for the set-up, use and maintenance of RME;
  • Works to improve health system operations which can be exported for use in other VA facilities;
  • Develops a systematic approach in assisting and providing technical guidance in assigned role among the medical center's services;
  • Modifies clinical and administrative programs, activities, and work processes related to role to achieve maximum utilization of hospital and health care resources;
  • Tracks progress of services, hospital-wide committees, and performance improvement teams to provide guidance and direction to hospital-wide team efforts;
  • Monitors unit-level performance improvement programs for compliance with policy, patterns and/or trends and ensures that finding of RME activities, including annual assessment of staff competency, are used to modify and improve program and facilitate accomplishment of hospital's goals and objectives;
  • Establishes and maintains computerized database and tracking system for QM data with periodic reports to administrative staff and services;
  • Serves as knowledge expert for manufacturers' instructions and VA Connecticut Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) related to pre-cleaning, decontamination and/or sterilization of any RME used and assists in developing policies and/or SOPs related to such before introducing any new RME for patient treatment;
  • Conducts process assessment with documented follow up tracking on performance improvement activities for resolution;
  • Serves as key advisor to Chief/SPS and provides briefings on RME program activities status;
  • Serves as a member of hospital-wide committees and in that role assesses and analyzes health system processes that impact quality patient care delivery;
  • Determines by observance adherence to all SOPs related to the processing of RME (Reusable Medical Equipment).
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

    • Basic Requirements:
      • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
      • Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
      • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
      • English Language Proficiency. RNs appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7407(d).
      Preferred Experience:
      • RN; BSN with MSN or master's in related field strongly desired;
      • Minimum of 4 years of clinical nursing practice during which a high level of professional practice and the ability to be self-directed in program development has been demonstrated;
      • Recent experience as a Quality Management Specialist, RME Coordinator or Sterile Processing desirable;
      • Demonstrated self-directedness in program development or implementing innovative changes;
      • Strong interpersonal, collaborative skills required; must be poised and articulate in communicating with people of varied educational levels and ethnic backgrounds;
      • Demonstrated performance as a team player who clearly models good practice and outstanding customer service to others.
      Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
      • Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
      • Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience.
      • Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.
      • Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
      • Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree.

      Physical Requirements: Registered Nurses should be physically and mentally capable to perform duties of the position. Position requires standing, walking and sitting for periods up to 8 hours per day.
